14-year-old boy shot riding all-terrain vehicle

A 14-year-old boy was shot in the leg Saturday morning while riding all-terrain vehicles with his father, authorities said.

They were riding in the desert about 11:30 a.m. near Interstate 10 and Watson Road in Buckeye when they heard gunshots, said Jeff Sprong, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Sprong said the boy began complaining of leg pain, and when his father checked on his condition, a bullet wound was found.

The 14-year-old was driven to the hospital by his father where he was treated and released, officials said.

Sprong said it's not uncommon for people to go shooting in the area, and a bullet may have ricocheted and struck the boy's leg.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office at 602-876-1011.
